87 Volvo 240 DL Stalling

Post by HDCollins »

My 87 Volvo 240 DL Stalls intermittently. I have changed the fuel filter, spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor, rotor, ignition coil and air intake hose in addition to a thorough fuel injector cleaning. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what may be wrong? Could it be the fuel intake sensors? Something computer related? Thanks!

I had this problem with my '85 245 GL. On the highway, it would intermittently lose power and at idle it would stall at random times. The problem was a bad throttle plate sensor.

Did you mean "Throttle Position Sensor?" My parts store can't find a plate sensor, but they have a position sensor. Thanks

I have a 740, but she said "no plate sensor for either make, only position sensor"

Right you are; the correct name is the throttle position sensor. Before you replace it, you should verify that it has not come loose and is adjusted properly.

With the engine off, manually open the thottle plate just a little. You should hear a "click" from the sensor. If there is no click, adjust the position of the sensor until you get a click just as the throttle plate starts to open. Then, see if the problem goes away.

I'll see if I can find any way to test this thing with VOM.

My 93 240 sedan 240 lost power at highway speeds for a brief second. It was something to do with the air mass meter (this happened 8 years ago). I think it was the oxegen sensor. It fixed the problem.
