s80 t6 1999-Speedometer spikes while trying to start
My s80 is driving me crazy. It cranks and cranks and won't start. It used to crank and after trying for a while it would start. Now the starter whines but won't engage for a few attempts I have to keep turning the key off and on.It always made the speedometer needle jump while trying since I got it.When it does start it smells like gas and smokes.Sometimes it cranked till the battery died. Also the immobilzer came up on the display and the ring didn't light.

The whining starter usually means the bendix is bad and a new starter is in order. Beyond that, you really need to read the codes from the OBD port so you have a place to start from on the repairs.

Yes, and make sure the battery is topped up--if the immobilizer is lighting there may not be enough voltage to power all systems during cranking. Often a bad crankshaft or camshaft position sensor can cause the RPM indicator to jump when starting.vegasjetskier wrote:The whining starter usually means the bendix is bad and a new starter is in order. Thank you for the help I changed the starter with a bosch reman and guess what ,the starter wouldn't make connection with the tranny.I had to get my core and bring it to a local alternator and starter rebuild shop and have the put my old housing on the new one and it started.Bosch is putting out the wrong housing on their starters. Also I have hard to start still as if I'm not getting gas I have to play with the pedal or even put it to the floor and then it blows grey smoke and clears up.I don't know if I have the security working against me or what.Thank you in advance for any and all help.

Did you get any codes pulled? You can take the car to your local auto parts store and they should be able to pull the OBD codes for you. That would be a big help.
