I have a 1997 Volvo 850, which I bought used 5 years ago at 65,000 miles - it now has 165,000 miles. Have maintained service religiously until recently. Rear brakes fixed 6 months ago. Car is not garaged. Don't know what needs to be done at 165,000 interval. Can you tell me what to have service repairman do, routinely? This is important as I drive 60 miles per day ...

I know you say you maintained it religiously- that's good, but did you think about the timing belt? It should have been done at 140K miles- because your engine is an interference engine, if it goes or the related parts go, then your engine will be toast. First things first, I would do the timing belt, the tensioner, roller, and tensioner pulley as well as the water pump before you do anything- then replace the breather box and related PCV hoses that are attached to the breather box under your intake manifold. www.fcpgroton.com sells a kit for your car for this. Other than that, the typical maintenance- new fluids every 2 years....drain and fill your transmission with Dex/Merc (Castrol sells a good product for this) if this has never been done- you'll only get about 3.5 quarts out, with a drain (full amount is about twice that) but still this is good prevention...you fill through the transmission's dipstick tube. Then rotor, cap, ignition wires and plugs. Your best bet is to use OEM or Bougicord wires but the rest is Bosch. For plugs, you're best using Volvo plugs, gapped correctly at 0.028 inches or cheap Bosch copper cores- stay away from the fancy Platinum ones- our cars don't like them. Guess that's about it. I had the timing belt done along with water pump on schedule; that's what I mean by managing maintenance on the major things .... I'll make a list of these additional requirements and see if that does the trick! Thanks.
