Hello all,
I've got a funny sound in the front part of the powertrain in my 2000 XC70. It doesn't change when braking and it is still there when going straight. The sound changes with vehicle speed and it kind of sound like an axle/CV joint problem.
I'm wondering if the axles and/or the CV joints is known to go bad on these models?
Thanks for any replies.
David

Prior to model year 2003 Volvo XC70s used a viscous coupling awd system. It was not as good as the current Haldex system, nor as good as Audi's etc.
A known weak point with it was the likelyhood of failure caused by years of driving with one or more wheels slightly bigger than the others. The constant difference in rotation speeds at the joints eventually wears the gears down.
I'm not saying your's has this affliction. It really could be many things. I'd wait for more responses from this board, and failing that, take it to an independent repair shop for evaluation.
