2000 V70XC Timing belt change

Post by zprovo »

So I finally got around to changing my timing belt this weekend on my 2000 V70XC SE with 106k...
First, I wanted to send a big thanks out to Made in Japan for the vadis PDF on the procedure...VERY helpful.
I also wanted to share a couple of observations...
A 2000 V70 doesn't need a special tool to take the tension off of the serpentine belt tensioner...a regular (don't remember the size 15mm?) wrench will do it.
Taking out the spark plugs is a REALLY good idea, much easier to move things in small increments.
I bought a cam locking tool for the job....no need, you really need to be deliberate to move those cams during this operation, but considering how nervous I was about a timing belt change, it was worth the $12 to get me out there doing it.
I didn't remove the crank pulley...I wanted to, but darrell waltrip volvo doesn't stock volvo tools (for the counterhold) and the car was up on a jack, wheel off, spark plugs out when I called them...so I just pressed on. Changing the belt was surprisingly easy with the pulley on if you have a flashlight and one of those mirror on a stick things...when you can see what you're doing there is plenty of room to get that sucker in and out.
anyways...I really appreciate this forum and the time that is put into it!

I am looking to do the timing belt in about 10k miles (about 2 months away). I am looking to get some more info before I attempt to do this. Could you email me a copy of the instructions and the tools that you think you need? I will order the counterhold you mentioned before I start so I can do everything.

Thanks for all the help!

See Lee's write-up for a non-VVT car.

That's pretty much what I followed to the T for my 1998.

And then go by this as well:

Glad you got it done but I have no idea how removing the plugs would make it any easier!
Never in my life have I had to remove the plugs unless I was changing them!

Removing the plugs makes it much easier to turn the crank with the belt on. Surely you know that JRL?

I think he is just checking if we know...
Example of Precision: Measure with a Micrometer, mark it with Chalk, and then cut it with an Axe.
