'96 850 Transmission Repair

I have a 1996 850 Turbo wagon, automatic transmission, w/ 113K miles. The gearshift can be moved into any position, but the car won't go into reverse or neutral. Think that it still goes into Drive (ran out of room in the garage when trying to troubleshoot). Had it towed to the dealer. Their diagnosis (after minimal effort; sounds like tech just started it up and tried to get it into gear w/o success) was that the problem was internal to the transmission and they advised replacement with factory-rebuilt.

Any advice for other possibilities or pros/cons of rebuild vs replace?

sounds like you are having the same problem as I am witrh my 96 850 turbo wagon. It seems that most dealers or tranny people will not even bother rebuilding, they just replace. Althouygh I am told that they use a Japanese transmission which is suppose to be great, and of course someone must rebuild them. But new is around $3000 right? I was hoping that it wasn't actually the transmussion, but that the differential was locked up for some reason. Sorry I don't know more, but I think were out a few grand bottom line.

An independent shop can do a full stock rebuild for less than $2k USD.
