240gl 1985 not starting

I bought my daughter her first car, a 85 240gl. Soon after owership it would not start. We have spark at the spark plugs and I do not hear fuel pumps when cranking the key, although if fuses #4 & #6 are jumped I can hear the fuel pump. With these fuses jumped while cranking the engine, it still will not start. I replaced the fuel pump relay which did not help and repaired 3 bad wires at the firewall and 2 wires that loop under the front of the engine. The last time it ran, I could hear the fuel pump and could hear a fan at a low speed even though the fan selector was off. This happened when the temp selector was turned to cold. I can't get it to do it again and that was before repairing the bad wires. I also replaced the battery ground wire. Thank you for any help in advance.
