Parking Brake Stuck

Post by MikeS70 »

Of course when it is cold the brake freezes up. The problem is that by the time I bring it to a mechanic, they tell me that they cannot find anything wrong with the parking brake, however I need new pads and rotors. Maybe from driving the first 5 miles all winter with the parking brake engaged?

Hey there... my old 240 had a similar problem where the parking brake would not disengage. The only way to brake it free was to back up a few feet before starting out. The mechanic said it was just a quirk of the car as it got old. I don't know if that same quirk would pop up in an S70... but maybe try backing up a little before starting off? Just a suggestion, hope it works.
You might try leaving it at the mechanic's overnight and going to see him in the morning so he can see what the trouble is.

Good luck!

The pads and rotors if warn are probably a result of sticking rear calipers which if you retract the pistons a few times, can sometimes be freed up. The parking brake uses shoes that are located on the drum part of the rotor.
