Oxygen Sensor?

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Oxygen Sensor?

Post by greencupbay »

Hey all, I just joined MatthewsVolvoSite about a week or two ago and it has already saved me $140 by keeping me from sending my ABS module to get fixed! Anyway, I have a problem (hence the post). My Volvo is giving me the codes P0300, P0171, and P1171 (off the top of my head, don't know the other one). One is a misfire code, and the others are something about upper and lower fuel trim *I think?*. It was idling rough, running SUPER rich at idle, getting really bad gas mileage, and I think that's it. I was thinking that it was going to be the ETM recall. I have a friend who is a mechanic at a Volvo dealership that hooks me up with diagnostics runs and he printed out a sheet for me. He said that the diagnostics test is telling him it is NOT the ETM (still wanna clean it), that there is a misfire on 4 coils, the MAF Sensor is bad (cleaned it already with MAF Sensor cleaner and nothing happened), that I need new oxygen sensors (specific ones not listed), and that the PCV is clogged and possibly leaking (he said it was easy and free to fix). The most convenient thing about all of this is that it has to be the most expensive things that go bad, right? Anyway, I was wondering if I should go ahead and buy a new MAF Sensor and clean and seal the PCV so that it might fix the random misfire and the oxygen sensors don't need to be replaced. If you do recommend that I replace things, please give me a link in which I can get parts cheap. Already priced front oxygen sensors at about $100 and back ones for about $25. Please help! Just got this thing about two weeks ago!!!

it sounds very much like the o2 sensor (nearest the engine),normally your car should start in openloop and then after few minutes should switch to closed when certain conditions regarding engine normal running temp and o2 sensors readyness. If you have a reasonably good scanner you should see the sensor's max and min voltage go from 0.1 to 0.8 around 7 or 8 times every 10seconds for a normal one,the mass flow sensor should have a steady rise and fall when you press the pedal, tap the area around the sensor to see if mass flow changes when in idle, there are other possibilites such as coolant temp sensor check ,any eratic output from scanner, or check with multimeter if its just a PTC .Fuel pressure problem maybe? or dirty injectors caused by bad fuel filter causing ecm to try and over compensate(hence long term uppr limit/misfiring codes)---hope this helps

Thanks for your help. My friend said that the oxygen sensors were flat and not fluctuating. I just wanted to know if any of those things could cause a misfire in the engine cause I didn't want to end up spending 400 dollars on new coils. I was wondering how/where/what kind of repair manual to get for a 1999 s80 2.9 non turbo cause I can't figure out where/how to clean the pcv on it cause there are no posts.

your milleage i presume is over 100thousand so its no harm to find and clean pcv pipework, sorry i dont know where it is on your car, replacement of the o2 sensor closest the engine would be good idea given the scanner readings, the back o2 sensor is only to check the operation of the cat so you can disregard that for the present,if you buy a second hand o2 remember if its from a different size/model volvo also change the end plug which has a resistor(in the s60 anyway!) specific to that model, see my posts regarding my high emission problems s60,hope this helps

Look in the repair database for 850 PCV cleaning. Your car is very similar to that.

Thanks for all your help guys (girls too?)! Tomorrow I plan on waking up and cleaning my PCV following the step by step instructions on the 850 tutorial. :D And, while I am in there, I really just wanna clean my injectors, ETM (Electronic Throttle Module) and also want to clean my throttle body. I know it is a while of work, but since I am in there, I might as well, right? I have a motorcycle to get me around! I have a big question though. If I am to clean all of this and put it back together (saying my 02 and Mass Air Flow Sensors are bad) and run it, will it just gunk up everything again? If so, I will just keep it apart and wait till I get the respective 02 sensors and also the MAF Sensor (after testing everything- thanks to the numbers provided by mykemac). If anyone wants those sites where they are $25 for the rear 02 sensors and $90 for the front ones, just let me know and I will put them in here; thats the cheapest I have found them.

No, it takes a long time for all the gunk to accumulate.

So, I got the injectors off by jiggling them a little and wetting them with LPC oil. After getting them off, I found a hose (seems to be a more solid hose inside an outer softer rubber hose). How do I get this hose off without breaking it? The rail looks like this and the hose is attached. I just need to get this off so I can get the lower half of my manifold off. If I pull a little hard, should I be afraid of breaking it?

Carefully twist and push in as well as pulling gently...if it breaks, you'll have to replace it- but if it does break, that's a good sign that it probably needed replacing anyway.

Okay guys, thanks so much for putting up with me!!! Well, I figured in return I would do some s80 picture tutorials. I have one on how to clean the injectors and how to clean the PCV. Just a heads up! Taking the stuff off is totally different than that of the 850 tutorial. I do have some picture questions/ concerns about my car, so stay posted my friends. Thanks again!
