960 1995 - Stalled and check engine light came on.

Post by mtux960 »

I have a 1995 Volvo 960 which stalled on me yesterday while waiting for a red light. It started up again on the second try. I have read a few posts here which sums it up to be 3 possible problems: thermostat, MAF sensor or temp sensor.

Prior to that the engine did stutter a little bit at red light by dropping rpms alittle bit and the day before the "Engine is overheating light" came on because the tank was pretty low because of a small leak that I can easily fix but even prior to that it had that idle stutter problem, which wasn't large but a small stutter.

Anyways yesterday it stalled after a stutter and was wondering what was the most likely culprit. Afterwards the check engine light came on as well.. I may just drive it to Autozone today to get a reading.. Could a bad thermostat cause the check engine light to go on?

I have 850 so not real familiar with inter-workings of a 960, but you might have a vacuum leak. A couple years ago mine died in driveway....nothing I could do to get engine started...checked everything I could. Had it towed to my mechanic, and after standard hourly labor fee problem was fixed...a 60 cent T-fitting between hidden vacuum lines.

Good luck

Well I actually got my 960 started on the second try and drove it home and even on the freeway at around 65mph... of course I turned off the a/c as well, but the really funny, strange thing about this case was after it stalled and restarted, It actually seemed to be running smoother than before but still had a slight stutter while idling where it dropped a little in rpms..

But i'm going to fix my hose leak right now.. and maybe drive it to Autozone and see if I can get a code reading.

*edit: I was able to get fault code on my own by using the led light on the test socket.

I was able to get fault codes
1-1-3
& 1-1-5
which either points to Fuel to rich/lean & N/A or Fault in Injector 1,3,5 & Fault in Injector 2,4,6

Update: I think i fixed the leak. But have other questions in regards to my stall problem. I just changed the battery and battery cable harness a couple weeks ago. Would a tune-up be in order? Could that be the reason for the stall?
