O2 Sensor removal

Post by turbotim2 »

I got my new catalytic converter. I have to remove the O2 sensors to replace the cat. Any advice on removal with the intent to reuse them? Also, is there a way to clean them or anything or better not to touch them at all?

Use electrical motor cleaner. Spray some in a small container and soak the end of the sensor. Brush lightly.

I wouldn't recommend going crazy trying to clean it though unless you can live without the sensor. I've had problems in the past. Heat can crack them and water can kill them.

Good luck!

I've never had any luck cleaning them. The only thing I can add is that you should definitely unplug the connector before you remove it to keep the wires from getting all wadded up.

i agree with ozark, there isnt much success cleaning them, the sensor does a burn off from the heated element when car is turned on first so it kinda does its own cleaning of impurities, and the cable should be disconnected prior to threading out sensor

I bought my replacemnet Bosch "OE type" from amazon,
https://www.amazon.com/Bosch-15097-Oxyge ... &carId=001
that is a lot cheaper than the blue boxed ones (I think Bosch is OEM for Volvo anyway, MSRP $238.33).

swedishparts in great britian are pretty good for parts, the engines may be abit smaller though than volvos supplied in states but i would imagine that the o2 sensors would be interchangable say if the model is the same but engine size is different provided end plug which includes a calibration resistor is also changed,

Thanks for the tips. I am going to try my hardest to reuse the sensors. I will see what they look like when I pull them. Thanks again.

OK, I replaced the cat and was able to successfully remove and re-install the front O2 sensor. I could not remove the rear sensor without destroying it so I ordered a new one.

The cat install went well, good fit however the rear O2 sensor boss is perpindicular to the pipe where the original boss went in at about a 45 degree angle. I am not sure how well the new O2 sensor will fit since it is very tight in there against the body of the car.

I bought the O2 sensor from Amazon, original Bosch part for $90 +/-. It fit well and is working fine.

I took the old catatlytic converter to a local scrap yard and got $25 for it. Seemed like a good deal.
