94 850 Turbo won't shift from park

Post by dimesfromheaven »

I'm baffled by this as it just recently occured.

I have a '94 850 Turbo wagon (Auto Transmission) that suddenly decided it won't shift from park without using the shift-lock release button. The problem is, I replaced the electronic switch that normally goes bad that's underneath the gear selector so I know that cannot be the problem. This was a sudden change, it didn't slowly go bad or only do this intermittently like an electronic malfunction will sometimes do. Could it be the brake sensor? If so, I am assuming that sensor isn't the same that tells the brake lights the brake is depressed because my brake lights are working properly. I am wondering, what else could it be?

yeahhh that is kinda a problem old 850's have. mine does it almost every time i drive it cold. there is a "shift lock override button" to the right of the shifter. push that in and you will be able to move it out of park. you could probably fix by tearing apart the entire central column but i'm used to the idiosyncrasies of old cars so i just deal.

What was the source of the part? Some of the aftermarket (Scan-Tech) parts are worse than the bad one that you replaced out of the box.

That's a good question, Lee. I honestly can't remember. It was one of the first repairs I did to the car when I purchased it a year ago. I guess I'll check that again.
