Need help on A/C fan running too long

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Need help on A/C fan running too long

Post by JimfromKazoo »

My 2004 S80 interior A/C fan has recently started running too long after the car is shut off. The first time it drained that battery. The fan will only run at slow speed. It appears that the Climate Control System is getting locked up. I took the fuse out over night and it fixed the problem for a couple of days and then it went back to running too long. I took it to the dealer and they did a software upgrade and calibrated the CCS ($124). It worked for a couple of days and then back to running too long. I think that the code that the dealer pulled was a 612, which says that the fan motor has a low signal. I don't want to give the dealer more $. I would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks, Jim

It could be that you need a new battery. If the battery is on its last leg, it will not have enough capacity to run the fan then start the car. You should be able to have it load tested at an auto parts chain store.

Just curious why you think it's running too long? I believe it's trying to prevent mildew/condensation from building up on the inside of the car. So it's probably working as designed and the problem lies elsewhere.

PepBoys sells a Bosch battery that's almost identical to the Volvo branded one. Only difference is it comes with a carry strap instead of plastic handles. $89 with core trade-in (your old battery).

And sorry you got taken by the Stealership. Nobody's looking out for the little guy anymore.

Thanks for the ideas. I thought that the fan was running too long because it was running well over 2 hours before I noticed it. As I said it drained the battery over night the first time. The dealer said that the after cooling feature was not even set to run in the software. The fact that the cooling fan was not controllable by the fan speed knob made me think that the CCS was malfunctioning. When I pulled the fuse over night, every thing went back to working like it should for a while. I should mention that it is a dual control automatic CCS. The fan speed is controlled based on the temp setting or manually if you turn the fan speed knob. Lastly, since the battery is not having problems when I pull the fuse, I am thinking that the battery is OK. I will have it checked anyway. Thanks, Jim

Whenever you disconnect the battery the fan gets reset. With key in on position turn it all the way up then back down. So a dying battery could, in fact, cause the blower to work improperly. That said, don't think mine has ever stayed on for two hours. Maybe 20 minutes or so max.

For you reference, here's the Haynes manual procedure. If your battery goes dead again you'll need to perform it.

Haynes #4263 chapter 5 part A section 3 (Battery - removal and refitting)

step 14. After reconnecting battery the engine may run erratically until it has been driven for a few minutes to allow the ECM to relearn. Initialize the UEM (upper electronic module) by unlocking the vehicle using the remote control. It will also be necessary to recalibrate the blower fan and sunroof as follows:

step 15. With the ignition turned on, set the blower speed switch to the maximum position, then to the minimum position. Calibration is now complete.

step 16. Turn ignition switch to position 1

step 17. Operate the sunroof switch to position the sunroof in the tilt position, then release the switch.

step 18. Press the switch again for at least 5 seconds, so the sunroof closes. The calibration is complete.

End of section 3

Well, I had the battery checked and it's good. Thanks for all the advice for replacement cal's and so on. I am still stuck with a CCS that is acting up. Back to the original track, what would cause the fan to run excessively long? I have pulled the fuse, done the calibrations and everything works for a couple of days then it starts acting up again. Are there any other diagnostics? TX, Jim

You should probably take it back to the dealer.

I am having a problem very simular with a 99 s80.
It seems to be about two to three months apart but I notice the blower running an hour after the car is shut off and the battery will be dead in a day or so.
If this is suppose to be a dehummidifing function I wonder if the drain is cloged up running from the evaporator ?
Just a note a two years ago the stealership said that I needed a blower motor for several hundred $.

When you shut the car down do you notice a puddle of water accumulating on the ground under the firewall area? If so, the drain is open.
