I just found this site and posting on ABS modules. Great posts!! I have a 1998 S70 with 191,000 miles. Love the car but the ABS light has been on for a while. I have a local mechanic I like, who is generally reasonable and fair on labor, however, his price to fix the ABS was just too much. I will try the suggestions on this post and let you know how it works out.

I think I need to repair mine again... It worked great for a while but now I am getting the lights back again.

It takes 24h for a complete dry,but you can install it after 12h.

Thanks to all for the "how to" on repairing the ABS module. I decided to give it a go this weekend myself. I needed a project. Out of all of my collected tools over the years I had no 5/32 socket. No worries, Lowes for $3.00 and while there picked up a tube of clear silicon sealant.
I inspected the module, removed the fuses, cables and torx head screws.
I decided to go with the "pry-bar" method to enter the crypt. Bingo. Easy once I found a board and 3" wood screws etc. Peeling up the clear membrane was a bit of a mess. Lucky I had a strong magnifying glass. Good eyes or not those bits circled in the picture are small. My 30watt iron was inadequate I suppose but I made it do. I just worked with the power leads because I COULD see minute cracking and hoped that was all there was to the problem. My solder job was amateurish but I managed to get some solder on the cracks. Hope it holds. Tested the unit and the lights went out in a few moments of driving. So I set about sealing the board and cover and reinstalling. Hooray. And thanks again.

1997 Volvo 850 GLT

I have had the ABS/TRACS light going on and off for a few years but usually only during summer and usually only a couple of times a year. But this year it is much more consistent. I took it to a local repair guy and he said he didn't have the correct scanner to get the ABS codes. SO I took it to the local Volvo dealer to get the codes. They charged me $108 to tell me I need a new ABS control unit for $1050, installed, along with $1500 of other things. ( never did get the codes) I did not have the work done.

What gets my blood boiling is I asked if I buy the part from them, is it something I can install myself. His reply was "No, we have to load the unit (software I assume) and clear the codes."

If what I am reading on this forum is true, there is no software to load and the codes clear themself. True? I will try this fix this weekend and if all is as advertised Volvo is gonna hear from me about their unscrupulous dealer. This is not the first time I have felt like I have been taken for a ride at this place.

There is no "mating" process on a '97. It is plug and play. The ABS/TRACS lights will remain on until you reach about 20 mph for the first time after it is repaired or replaced but it is good to go after that.

Hi, I'm New Here. First i wanna thnx the person who did the write up, But i am very stuck, i am new in the do it yourself car repair due to low coming income. i have a 99 s80 the car i bought it for my mom as a bday gift 3yrs ago, and for the past year the car started to get all those symtoms Abs light track ect. after much thinking whether to buy another car or fix it i wanna give it a go fixing it, (the car stills mess like new). i located the box where it is, and i started to remove alot of pieces and things to make room(maybe i complicated it a lil more then u guys but i only knew i have to remove that box module). and um stuck i cant seem to locate the four torx bolts that i need to remove so the box can come out. this are pics of what i have done so far.The Box is under that silver thing, but um stuck trying to separate it or dont know how to remove it. PLEASE I WOULD APRICIATE ANY HELP, ALSO I AM A BEGINNER, so please be patient with me if i dont understand something. thank you.

First off, welcome to MVS.

The bolts, at least on a 850, are on the bottom of the module at all four corners. They are not a standard torx but an E-torx which is like a bolt head with an inverse torx pattern.

I'm not sure if this is at all applicable to your S80 but one of the other Moderators - Vegasjetskier - has an S80 and he likely knows.

Talk about Cake. The hardest part was geting the box open for sure. However the tip to screw it to a board, use a fulcrum and pry the top off (not pry it apart) was the best. After digging the silicone out, no problem getting it apart.
Onece apart, the two large power ones were cracked, however just to be sure, the electrical engineer here at the office reflowed all the connector ones and the coil ones like was suggested. Let's see if it works this evening!
