It's NOT good...my 1993 960 wagon...crankshaft and more

Post by msamyrox »

Oh man...I KNOW it's not looking real good for my wagon...
I bought it just a few months ago from a private owner. After I'd driven it for a while, it just didn't start one day. I figured out, after a pretty good look, that a small hose that branched from the air filter hose was disconnected. I got it running, but the check engine light wouldn't go off. I then realized that the power steering fluid canister was almost empty, and there was a stress mark ground into the plastic...I saw that the 'grind' marks had gone through a corner of the canister, leaving a small hole! Much to my extreme dismay, I discovered that whoever had put the serpentine and timing belts on must NOT have had any clue about routing them properly, or about replacing the covers at the front of the motor! :x I saw that the serpentine belt had rubbed through the p.s. canister, and then noticed that the timing belt had chewed huge holes through the cover at the motor's top front, even worse, it had been 'grinding' on the lower cover also, damaging it...and the entire area around where the crank shaft is attached at the front of the motor is thickly covered in oil...
I'd cleaned the under body well with engine cleaner and water, and let the car sit for a few days, so that I could find the problem faster. I was really upset to see oil all around the crank shaft. To get a better look at where it was coming from specifically, I removed both covers and that's when I saw how terribly stressed and damaged they are. Also, of course, the edge of the serpentine belt is frayed and worn off from it rubbing through the plastic! Is there ANYTHING I can do to help my poor car? The crankshaft is my biggest concern. Is this part fixable, or is there a possibly a seal that may have gone bad? I'm just so sad, and I don't know what to do, or where to go from here...HELP!!!?! Please!?!
Thanks so much in advance for any helpful advice anyone has!!
:( Amy

From what you are describing I think your crankshaft is probably OK. The crankshaft is a very large piece of steel inside the engine that the connecting rods attach to. It's what extracts the power from combustion of the fuel/air mixture and sends it to the transmission.

You probably just need to install a new serpentine belt and possibly the timing belt (if it was damaged too), a new power steering fluid reservoir, and new timing covers. Not a pleasant repair, but much better than a failed crankshaft.

For real?? I would be thrilled if that is all that's necessary!! There is a very small ticking sound that relieves itself when I put my foot on the accelerator...should I be worried about that? What do you think would make such an accumulation of oil around that crank case? It is close to the oil filter... Thanks again for giving me advice!! I'll try those things first for sure!!
Thanks a TON!! :D

It's hard to tell without actually seeing it, but I suspect that the power steering fluid leaked down on the pulley and sprayed out from there. Either that or you have a crankshaft seal leak, which would be more work to fix.

The ticking might be due to low oil pressure. Do you keep the oil level topped up at all times?

I am unsure what you mean my "ticking" but I know that if any of your fluids are at all low or empty for your sake. Your car will make a sort of whining and other indescribable noises. I thought it was one of my belts at first but it ended up being my transmission fluid and power steering fluid. Have you check all your fluid levels?

Hey everyone...thanks for all of the suggestions! I replaced the serpentine belt, and the car definitely seems to have more power. The fluid levels are all good, and I continuously monitor them. I am leaning toward the spark plug wires, their connections and/or the plugs themselves as possibly causing the faint 'ticking' noises. In neutral, if the accelerator is pressed, the noise goes away... so I thought it may possibly be something to do with misfiring...?? I do believe, also, that I've discovered the source of the fluid mess. The A/C compressor is 'spitting' fluid as it turns, and the clutch is seizing up. I'm 99% sure that it has to be replaced, because of the fluid leak, the air conditioning losing power with acceleration, and it's failure to blow cold air on demand. Anybody have input or advice? I am very grateful for the help I've gotten here...I feel like I'm getting to know this car a lot better!!
One final issue: I'm fairly sure that the previous owner adjusted the idle to hide the compressor leak. I say this because when the air is off or the heater is turned on, the idle will not go below 11...where as, if the A/C is on, the car idles at about 7.5... ideas??
THANKS AGAIN!!! Amy
