XC70 2001 'reduced performance'. ETM problem?

Post by singnbe »

Hi, I have an X registered (2001) XC70. I imagine having read previous forums that I have an ETM problem, though the various descriptions of the problems don't quite fit mine.

On a long run (half an hour plus) the engine seems to misfire a few times, as if you have taken your foot off the accelerator and replaced it immediately. This is followed by an amber exclamation mark and the message ' reduced performance'. Although the performance is reduced, I am still able to travel at a reasonable (motorway) speed. I do not have any problems driving around locally, the car performs normally with no warning lights/messages.

Anyone's thoughts or diagnosis would be greatly appreciated since I am driving to France next week!

Welcome to MVS.
I agree that this doesn't sound like and ETM issue.
How long since a tune up? This would require new plugs, checking the wires... maybe even the MAF sensor.

Good morning, many thanks for replying so quickly. I bought the car a couple of months ago. it was used as a second car so I imagine that it may need a tweak. I guess that until it is plugged into the computer it will be difficult to diagnose what the problem is. Does it sound expensive/ time consuming?! Cheers, Richard

Richard,
I would start with spark plugs...make sure they are gapped correctly- 0.028~0.030 inches and either use Volvo genuine plugs for your car or Bosch copper core (don't use iridium or platinum)...then we're talking cheap! If this doesn't do it, then you're off to trying to diagnose more- typically, you'll only get a code for misfires if it's the plugs. If it's more, then you'll get some other codes, like a MAF code- replacing the MAF sensor is easy to do (5 mins with hand tools) but will cost you about $200. The good news it that it can be cleaned with MAF cleaner, which may do the trick- but often not. Whatever you do, don't touch the sensor inside the MAF sensor tube- all you want to do is spray the sensor liberally an then let it drip dry. Good luck to to you!
