tranmission issues with 2002 xc70

Post by rja1 »

I have a 2002 cross country with 122k miles. Recently the transmission has been very jumpy particulary when slowing down and turning corners or speeding up after a stop light. Today the "transmission service required" message lit up and the car went into "limp" mode. ie., it would not accelerate very fast. In addition, the check engine light came on. I checked the transmission fluid level which showed ok and it was NOT very dark. The oil level is fine. Any speculation on what is going on. A side note, the car consumes alot of oil and i recently switched to high mileage oil but that has not stopped the consumption (There are no leaks).

Even though the fluid looks right, I would flush it. The correct fluid for your car is JWS-3309. You can get this from the dealer (expensive!!) or from online places in the form of Mobil-3309 ATF or you can go to your Toyota dealer and get it- they sell it as their Type-IV ATF fluid.

well my mechanic could not diagnose the problem cause he lacked the software so i had to go to the dealer. Dealer indicated that there were error codes in the transmission module. So they wiped the software clean and reinstalled then "trained the car to drive again". Unfortunately we still get the same jumpiness but w/o the error codes. They said the transmission service light would come on again in 50-100 miles then they could diagnose if it is the main system computer or something internal to the transmission (which means dump the car). we'll see.
