95 850GLT Left Passenger Door Black Gasket, what to do????

Post by viper69 »

I own an 850GLT, it's in great condition.

However like any car at 10yrs old..certain things DO go/fall apart.

So, the black rubber gasket that is a single piece, which lines the left rear passenger door finally came off..Actually, I took it off because half of it was getting crunched by the door when I tried to close it tonight. It appears to be "glued" on, and has some small conical black pegs that hold it onto the door normally.

Where would I get it fixed? Where would I get a new part, how much are we talking in case anyone has replaced this? Is this a do itself your job? I can bring it to the dealership if they do it.
Also now that I removed the lower gasket, do I have to close the door more carefully and/or do I need to worry about water coming in now too till I get it fixed??

Second, and this is a bit harder to describe. On top of the car on the roof actually, there are two (one/side) metal strips that run down the sides of the roof, and meet the windshield and rear one as well. While they are intact, the black paint that covers them is starting to come off and expose the shiny metal beneath which it covers..How does someone fix this??

I would appreciate any help on these two.

Thanks.

I've got the EXACT same problem with my 850glt.. Havne't thought about a fix yet as the weather around here is not conducive to body work this time of year...

Hi Viper69,

I've looked high and low for the volvo door weather stripping, you might want to call a dealer. It is my understanding that the stripping clips into small holes on the door. What usually happens is the clips break or the rubber rips. You may just need to get new clips.

Since these cars don't have a "gutter" like older cars, the weatherstripping is important to keep precipitation out.

As for the "rails" that run the length of the windshield, roof and rear window, I have no paint left on mine. I haven't priced them, but since they are not broken, I'm not going to fix it.

Good luck! Thanks Volvofreak for your help,

Eoin

I have priced the roof rails , about four years ago. Mine are still as they were. I cannot remember the exact price but I believe they were about $150.00 to $170.00 each including labor at the dealer in Charlottesville, Virginia.

I have seen posts here that describe removing as much of the flaking black paint as possible then using carefully applied top grade electrician's black tape. At a distance it looks good. It's cheap and when it starts to peel, take it off and replace with another $2.00 roll of tape.

I have recently priced those roof rails..They are a F**king fortune..$190.00 apiece!!!!

I did ask what people have done the guy in the shop suggested slightly sanding down the surface, and spraypainting them. I think I may do that when the time comes..Or bring it to a body man to do the painting. I am not sure what paint would be best to place on that metal. Considering I don't know what type of metal it is really. Those things are a fortune!!!!!!!!
