MVS downtime in the next 3 days

Post by matthew1 »

I'm going to migrate the site yet again, this time to a server with more expandability.

You will notice some downtime either Thursday, Friday or Saturday, depending on when I see an 8-hour block of time in my future.

You may try to load the site in your browser... don't worry about that. There's nothing you can break.

When it's up you'll (hopefully) notice much greater responsiveness when you click links.

Thanks
Matt

That's great. It's currently taking forever to load up a post.

Nice!

I have noticed this forum to be one of the slowest I visit, doesn't stop me from coming though! Will be nice for it to be a bit quicker.

Reminds me what a 'labor of love' this is for Matt - time for me to click the 'donate' link and give back a small portion of the money I've saved using this site. Thanks Matt!

I just put it down to the way my computer works. Living in the Australian bush I can't get cable broadband, so all my computer information comes via an expensive satellite connection, and it doesn't take the slightest notice of me when I ask it to hurry up. :(

You're welcome. It's a labor of love and it makes me some spending money, so I'm "a pig in mud". It's one of my proudest achievements... I tell folks I have a Volvo site with over ten thousand members and their eyes get big. :-D

The programming and server administration work helps sharpen my skills. For this new server I chose a very neat host -- one that's aimed at developers -- that allows (forces) you to build the server from scratch. You choose what Linux OS to install, it's installed, and you have a clean slate to work with, and you're helped along with a fantastic array of documentation and help. From there you build up all the tools that make a simple server into a customized web server (or file server, or email server, etc), targeted at your specific needs.

So this new server is tuned to serve this medium-sized web site with a few dozen concurrent users hitting a forum and WordPress pages. Sorry for the geeky tech talk there.

Needless to say, I learned a vast amount about Linux server administration, which I was sorely lacking.

That is going to save me some money. I thought it was my old steam driven computer that was slow and was looking around for, maybe, a coal powered one to try to get posts in quicker.

You've got me a bit confused Bill.

As it's obviously not coal, what is the fuel source that heats up the steam for your computer?

I thought everything depended on coal up Durham way.

This website does load slow for me as well. I'll be looking forward to seeing how it runs after you are done with things.

Thanks!

You choose what Linux OS to install
Which one are you going with? I'm running Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty as dual boot on all of my desktop computers now - I only boot a windows partition when I absolutely must. It is very stable on the desktop build, when I get time I think I will build up a server just to play with it. The only downside to Jaunty is that the IPV6 is more or less built into the kernel and it is difficult to remove if your firewall wasn't built to handle IPV6.
