I decided to change the timing belt for maintenace purposes.
When I was aligning the marks, I made a mistake using marks that were white. At this point I removed the belt. Once I noticed my mistake the camshaft was about an inch where it should be. I turned the Camshafts by hand as well as the Crankshaft without the belt on. I wanted to use the proper marks. Could this cause damage??.
Does it matter what direction I turned the crankshaft or camshaft to resolve this?

It should be OK since you did it by hand.

If you have not yet turned anything individually I would put the new belt on and crank everything as a system by hand. At that point you can fine tune to the factory marks by releasing the tensioner if you are not properly aligned. If it binds while trying to do that you can rotate the camshafts by hand to release them. Don't force anything.
Be very slow and deliberate when re-compressing the tensioner so that you don't damage it if you go that route.

It would have been best if you did not more the cams at all. Just put the belt on and move everything as one. Then you could have checked to make sure it was all correct before releasing the tensioner.

There are two versions of the marks. One is a mark centered in the valley of the pulley and he other is a mark on each ridge on either side of the valley that should be centered on the crankshaft mark on the block.
I know the first type is shown here and I think that the second type is pictured as well.
