S70 2000 Headlight short circuit wiring, electrical

Post by JBRollo »

I offer this as a warning and something to check especially if you are having weird electrical problems.
Bought a 2000 S70 w/ 50,000 miles recently (Aug 2009). Low beam headlight was out. When changing it I discovered a lot of bare wire in/around the inside of the low beam headlight compartment. Further, I have never seen such a small gage wire used on such a high amperage, high heat area. Checked the other side. Worse! One wire was completely bare.
The wiring was OK a short distance from the headlight area so I wrapped it. Because the wire used is well below even high school standards, I will look for a heavier pigtail and splice it in later.
I sincerely hope this is a fluke because if it is common, its a crime. Because the headlight wiring usually has rather heavy duty, slow blow circuit protection, it could probably wreak havock on sensitive computer circuits.
