92 940 8v broken timing belt

Post by glasnevin1151 »

Hello to all and thank you in advance for any information you may provide. I am the owner of a 940GL, 8 valve engine and the timing belt has broken. So far the shop has not contacted me, but I am expecting to have that diag verified. I have found contradictory information re resultant damage when the belt breaks. The engine is listed in several places as an interference engine, and yet I have read that valves are not damaged whne the belt breaks. Any and all opinions highly valued. By the way I have 370,000 miles on the car and really want to keep it if possible.

Welcome To Matthew's Volvo Site.

The B230F, 8valve, is a non-interference engine.

Hopefully you will be able to put a few more miles on the odometer.

Bill.

Thanks Bill, thats what I thought - more than one part guide/catalog listed the engine as an interference, hence the confusion. Thanks again, its great to find a good Volvo site.

All the SOHC volvo engines are non-interference engines. On the other hand, the DOHC engines are. You should be able to throw another timing belt on there and drive it away.
