S80 T6 1999, I drive an amazing car, but the engine stutters

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

S80 T6 1999, I drive an amazing car, but the engine stutters

Post by diplomat128 »

Hey guys, in January I bought a 1999 Volvo S80 T6. I read alot on the internet about it and I've seen all the horror stories, but since most people go on the internet to vent, I decided I'll give it a try, I mean for 4 stacks, it couldn't be a bad choice!

It's an amazing car really, the car hauls ass, you can rip it through the streets all you want (joking it sounds like I beat the crap out of it but I really don't). Anyways, smooth ride too, I get alot of compliments and when girls get in they go crazy because of how nice and comfy it is.

OK now! THE PROBLEMS:

I was driving on the highway and all of a sudden my car lost power, I drove home with the MAF unplugged. I replaced the MAF sensor, and I've cleaned the ETM.

Now what's happening is that the car behaves kind of weird. The idle sometimes really isn't smooth, it feels like it just wants to die in my arms, and let's say I'm backing out of a parking, the car is gonna kick the gas, then slow down then kick it again. Really weird, it also doesn't haul as much as it used too.

All these problems started happening all of a sudden off the highway. Is this how ETM's normally fail? A big bang and that's it? Or is there some other part I've overlooked? Maybe it's because of a bad coil or bad spark plugs? Is there an idle control valve I should clean?

please let me know, this car is driving me nuts right now! And it's leaking power steering fluid, just a little bit but it's still annoying.

Could be the ETM. Check out the special forum titled Don's ETM Room.

Yeah but since I cleaned it and it didn't do nothing, I'm hoping there is another part that I overlooked. I mean ETM's are bad on this car but maybe there's another part that can create similar symptoms...

You can try replacing the spark plugs, but your problem sounds like a bad ETM. Does it have a yellow sticker on the front of it?

Yes it's a yellow tagged ETM. I don't know about the spark plugs. It's not constant though, some times it idles and drives so smooth and someother times I park home and while I wait for the turbos to cool down the idle is bouncing around a little.

Now it stalls whenever I accelerate and brake quickly... I seriously hope I don't have to bring it to the dealer for this :|

I'm gonna bring it to Volvo Blainville apprently it's a very good place and they are only 55$ an hour. So I'll try to pull some codes and maybe even replace my ETM there for cheap or I hope it's just some stupid thing that has to be replaced/cleaned lol...

in the meantime... I noticed I have a really annoying buzzing sound coming from the center console.... it's especially present when you just put the key in the ignition or you just opened the door or started the car... I wonder what that is.

It's probably the small fan that pulls in air for the climate control.
Put your finger over the small vent below the cd player, if it changes pitch, that's what you're hearing.
