90 240 AC Retrofit kit 9134808

Post by UpstateNY »

Hot and humid and the old AC quit. It's the original R-12 system and it was suggested I convert it rather than repair it. Anyone know where I can get a 9134808 retrofit kit?

I'm not sure of the part #, but FCP Groton and eeuroparts.com both carry oem retrofit kits. If you're mechanically inclined, you can do it for less using a universal o-ring kit and blue nylog from ackits.com, and get a set of fill-port adapters from Walmart. I also bought the receiver/dryer from ackits.com, but I have an '87 740 - I'm not sure if they carry the proper one for your car. I purchased the diester oil from my local Harbor Freight. You can probably source all of these items from the web - this is just what I found to be cheapest for my conversion.

Thanks. Have you - or anyone - successfully converted using just the O rings? I'd do the O rings but my mechanic said the only way to do the conversion is to use the kit. Of course, that's probably the best way - but will the O rings really work - or am I wasting my time? I wonder because of the cost of the retrofit kit. I found the retrofit kit for $771!!! Volvo wants $850. My mechanic wanted to get me to convert it last year and quoted $245 for the kit. What's up with the price gouging? Demand I imagine. It's robbery regardless of the reason.

The retrofit kit merely contains the parts you need, in one place, at an exorbitant price. The walmart adapters for the hi/low ports are a cheaper alternative to the adapter provided in the kit. Worse, the volvo kit I bought (and later returned) had the adapter that screws onto the u-shaped line - but not the u-shaped line. My car did not come from the factory with said line, so I would have had to pay $109 + ship for one from FCPG to use the adapter from the Volvo kit. In comparison, yesterday I went to a local u-pull-it salvage yard and took one off a car for $3.99 plus tax. Yup, $4. They are aluminum, and don't decay.

Super news. I don't need the retrofit kit - the ac didn't go - it was a broken wire. Whew! I dodged a big one. It may happen one day, but I'll deal with it then. Thanks. for your interest and help.
