850 T5 1994 odometer gear

Post by danw1 »

So here's the dilemma, Ive followed the very good thread to remove the dash and instrument cluster, no problems, I've found the little broken gear no worries, the problem is over here in Australia the cheapest replacement part I can find is 50 dollars, for a tiny little cog! To buy it and get it posted from the states I'm looking at 80 usd, for a little cog.... I reckon Im gonna just put it back together and live with the lack of odometer, I just hate putting stuff back in the car that is still broken, it plays on that little part of my brain that I find very difficult to ignore. Anyone got any ideas?

You really should replace 2 gears...the little one and the
"pod" gear it fits onto. You can get them off eBay. Find
the sellers on eBay and e-mail to ask if they will mail to
Australia as first class mail for these small items would
be cheap. good luck, Phil

Your essentially saying that your labor is free, which is really a mistake. It would be a shame to have gotten that far and then not finish the job within sight of the goal. My philosophy with DIY is that I've already easily saved hundreds doing the job myself, so (within reason) I don't sweat the parts prices. (In fact, with the Volvo, I'll usually 'treat' myself to OEM parts, seeing as many of the issues posted here involve rework caused by inferior aftermarket stuff).

Regarding the odometer gear, the upside of replacing it is that you won't have to guess on mileage related parts replacements, oil changes, timing belts, and the like. I also personally can't stand things that don't work properly.

While you are at it, don't forget to proactively replace the instrument cluster light bulbs.
