Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.
First you are in the right forum.
740 fuel injection/pump relay is a 2 in 1 type: It can be bought at a reasonable price from one of our sponsors, IPD, FCP, MySwedishParts, whose links are at the top of the page.
As for the 'smoker' it may well be the turbo seals but could be several other things which, without more information, will be hard to diagnose on the forum.
16 inch wheels for the 940 - one comes to mind as it was fitted to my 940. Volvo part 3516422, 6.5" x 16". Of course there will be others, both Volvo and non-Volvo.
Your point 2 I can't answer as I am not into modifications.
Point 3. If all you did was change the fluid and the filter without a complete flush I don't think you would do much harm. If you did a complete flush then you may have hastened the demise of the box. For future reference Volvo cancelled the need for a filter clean on the AW boxes in December 1990. The fluid change is still required. It may be that the box is failing, especially if the routine fluid changes at 20,000 mile intervals haven't been carried out, but I have heard some boxes with really loud whines and they have gone on to very high mileages.
Most of the B230F and FT models use the AW70 or AW71 boxes. The AW71 is a heavy duty version of the AW70. So you are looking at a range from 1981 (240) to 1995 (940) being all compatible. The AW72, which has a reinforced casing, was used on 1989/90 740GLE, 760GLE and 760 turbo and 1991/92/93 940GLE. The ZF-4HP22L was used on 1983 760GLE, 1984 760GLE TD, 1985 740 and 760TD, 1986 740 and 740GLE TD and 1987 740. You have a large field to choose from.
Bill.
