760 Door Handle
760 Door Handle
Well, my drivers side handle no longer operates the door. I took the handle out and the handle had become disconnected from the hook. There's also a rubber piece with a dowel that I'm not sure how it all connects together -- I checked Haynes but the closeup they had I couldn't understand

This is the VADIS parts list. I have missed off the description to produce a clearer picture.
Part #42 is the link which hooks over the loop (not numbered but is immediately above part #28) on the inside of the door handle. The link is then connected to the lock, #1, at its bottom end. At the bottom there is a rubber bushing, part #3, which does look like a grommet, that fits into the latch. The link goes through a hole in a clip, part #2, into the bushing and the clip then fastens on to the link. The lower parts are shown more clearly in the Haynes manual. One cause of failure of the link is the clip. I have seen instances of the clip coming loose, especially when work has been done inside the door. This allows the clip to move out of place and the link is only held in place by the bushing and eventually comes out.

Bill thanks for the advice
I think when I mentioned grommet, it may have been the incorrect usage of the term. In my first picture, you see that the loop is hooking a hole on the #28 component. I mislabeled them
The door will operate fine using the interior handle, or if the hook is pulled up so it is simply the handle mechanism I'm trying to get functioning again. When I unbolted the doorhandle, it came out not attached to #28 and came just like it looks in the exploded diagram -- unattached to anything else
I tried to orient #28 in any possible way to get the mechanism working to no avail. #35 is what I think the little metal rod is, and in my first picture is between the two holes on the rubber piece. I have no idea if this is the correct place for it, #28 doesn't look completely like the piece on my door from what I can tell but it's the closest thing I can identify it with.
Thanks for the help!
Darrell

Update:
Well, I'm on my way.
Figure out the positioning of the plastic piece from these pictures I found here: http://www.brickboard.com/RWD/volvo/135 ... epair.html
Reattached the door release hook to the other end of the plastic piece and I have a functioning handle (sort of) ! There is not enough slack it seems, between the original position of the hook and the final position when the handle is mounted. Testing the handle when it's not bolted in it works great, but after it's mounted I get weird symptoms like not being able to lock the doors (almost like the central locking system thinks that the door is open) I'm going to open it up tomorrow and play with the hook position again, but at least for now I don't have to reach through the backseat to open the front door
Thanks,
Darrell

There should be an adjuster on the link to lengthen or shorten it.

There is a part that isn't labeled in the diagram but it's the pivot piece that anchors the hook to the handle mechanism. It's made of a hardened plastic on my 88 and I believe the cause of my issues. I got a handle off of a 940 at the boneyard and I noticed that the design had improved! The piece was made of steel rather than hardened plastic, so if you require one of these replacements, your best bet is to grab one off of a 940. I'll be replacing mine once the spring rolls around.
Hope this helps others!

I just fixed mine; I got the parts from the junkyard also but my observation is different. The identical part on later Volvo model (mine is 97) is made up of brittle rubber or PVC sort of while the older part is made of hard but bendable rubber and so I believe it would last better.
For easy re-assembly the door handle you can use a thin plastic or nylon loop (used to tie newspaper) pull the rod end hook out of the rectangle hole and hold it while maneuvering to slip that O-ring (from replaced part) into it and you done. You need to do it slowly and patiently.
