This may be the cleanest & cheapest solution. I used 2 layers of duct tape starting along the rubber gasket edges and masked the painted roof on both sides of the drip rails about 4 inches wide. Then I cut away the peeling finish using an aluminum straight edge (yardstick) and a razor knife carefully avoiding the rubber gasket. After that I just used a 120 grit sandpaper to remove all the glue and then finished off with a 400 grit sandpaper to give the bare aluminum a brushed effect. Honestly it looks pretty damn good.

Why not just take the extra 60 seconds to remove them from the car? Then there is no worries about over spray and masking off the car. It is also easier to strip the old tape off sitting in a chair then having to worry about slipping and doing damage to the finish.

Since I have them off and I have the single stage red (601) I am able to work on the roof paint without having to worry about turning the molding red.

MIJ!

Hey there. Did you ever get your trim stripes painted with Liquid Tape? How'd it turn out? I've got the same problem, thinking about your solution this weekend.

I've got the same problem on my 850 wagon. I'm thinking of using chalkboard paint. It's black matte paint--I just don't know how it will hold up...

Chalkboard paint would pickup every bit of dirt and muck that you ran into and would probably chip pretty bad, too.

I put mine off long enough. I finished doing the bumpers today using Adhesion Promoter and Bumper Coating and it looks great. More of a mat look than glossy. Made by Dupli-Color and available in all the auto supply stores. It was easy to do the bumpers right on the car. I am wondering if I can do a good job with the roof strips on the car as well. Messing with clips and anything plastic on an old car is trouble. It all breaks. Leave it alone if possible seems to be the rule.

Popping off the trim isn't that big of a deal. Just be gentle and you should be OK. The trim is secured via metal clips that are attached to plastic attachments. These attachments themselves clip onto the frame of the car. I coated the rubber and the plastic attachments in Armor All to revive them and keep them strong.

I took mine off and coated them with DupliColor underbody spray but will have to take it off and try something else. After two weeks, it still has not dried! It looked good when I first sprayed it on, but I accidentally let it touch the newspaper I had under it, and it stuck firm (a day after I sprayed them!). When I pulled the paper off, it took some of the coating with it, leaving bare metal. Nasty nasty nasty idea to use this product for this application.

I did both my bumpers and the roof strips with the same products. Roof strips came off real easy. One strip, all the plastic coating had peeled away. The other strip was a pain. Nothing had peeled and I had to use a razor knife to whittle it all off. Thought about using a heat gun but was afraid of results to the rubber edging. Sanded the metal down with 400 paper.
