850 Wagon 1994 non-turbo Engine shttung down

I have a 850 Wagon. Problem started about a months back one day After I made a turn and started going uphill on the road the engine shut down for about 2 seconds and then started back up. A few days after that the car refused to start. It would start and shut down with starter spray. Pressing the pressure valve next to the fuel filter i did not get a spray of gas. I changed the fuel pump relay and the fuel pump (thanks ozark Lee) & spark plugs and the car still did'nt start. However when i opened up the air intake box it started up. I am still confused by what fixed it ( i dont think it is the MAF sensor as I had tried to start it with MAF cable disconnected and it still did'nt start).
It ran fine for a week until today when i made a turn to go uphill and the engine shut down again. It started back in a few seconds. Any ideas.

My check engine light is on since i bought the car 5 years back. The seller told me its EGR and nothing to worry about.

Since you have a '94 you have a built in code reader. Pull the codes from ports A-2 and A-6 (A-6 may or may not read anything at all - it depends on which ECU you have).

That it runs after the air box cover removal is a head scratcher but the coil wire is routed along the side of the air box and it may be that you have a bad coil wire.
