Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

I have never heard of smoke from an automatic box. Is the smoke coming from the exhaust pipe or is it coming from underneath the car?

Hi, no the smoke is coming from the exhaust, but the RAC man who towed me back suggested that it was the auto box breather, venting to the inlet manifold, as the smoke was mainly white with the odd tinge of blue, but cant seem to find the breather he mentioned

I can't find it either. The attached is the parts list for the V40 box. The only thing I can find is part #26 - Air vent valve. Usually if a part such as that is joined to another part by a hose the hose is shown.

I suggest you also check your coolant because white smoke, when the engine is at normal operating temperature, is usually a sign of water in the combustion chamber.

Transmissions never vent to the intake manifold. They vent to open air .

I agree with the above on white smok ususally means coolant loss. In this case you have white and blue. Grey and blue would indicate oil so I am concerned you may have both leaks.

I would start with the emngine breather - pull the dipstick and see if excesive air is being push out while the car is running. If it is not then you need to look at the turbo for oil leaks.

On the coolant issue you should pressure or vaccuum test the system to check for leaks.

Please report abck and let us know what you found.
If youare concerned with a blown head gasket you can buy at NAPA and similar a test kit that will test the rad fluid for combusiton gases. Its about $12 and easy to use.

Unfortunately, like me, he lives in the UK. I have never seen such kits for sale over here.

Hi, I've checked all fluids, water, oil and brake fluid etc and there is no loss in any, I've had the pressure test done on the rad fluid and there is no sign of oil contamination, a Volvo tech thought it might be the cat but having disconected the exhaust below the turbo it still smokes like a smoke generator when it warms up !! He even went on the Volvo tech site but nothing like this has been reported. The smoke smells metallic not oil based and due to the lack of loss on the fluid front I am at a loss as to what it could be. I have been told that the turbo is air cooled not oil cooled is that correct?

my wife complained of execessive smoke as well and when I checked, the coolant level was below min. Should it continue to smoke once I add coolant? Am I ok to drive it for a bit to see if 1) the coolant goes low again and/or 2) to see if the smoke goes away (is that even likely)?
