Which brake pads should I buy

Post by hsvt »

Hi,
I have a 2005 V70 2.4 non turbo which needs new brake pads in front. There seem to be a lot of brands and technologies out there. I want best braking and quiet. I believe I will have to sacrifice longevity to get what I want.

Can anybody tell me my choices and where to get them?

I moved your post to the maintenance forum where it will get more attention.

You can never go wrong with OEM pads but they are quite dirty and quite expensive. On the older cars (850s) I have been using the Mintex Red label pads and I have had good luck with them so long as they are properly greased and shimmed as necessary.

I have never had good luck with any auto parts store pads as they all squeal like a banshee. They stop just fine but the noise will drive you nuts.

On the newer cars others may have better alternatives and I will let them chime in.

On most of my brake components I wind up ordering them off of the net. A good selection of quality vendors have banner ads at the top of the page. I think I have bought all of my Mintex pads through FCP Groton. Other sources for pads are eEuroparts.com and Darrell Waltrip Volvo for OEM stuff (800) 689-0021 ask for Jamie or Don.

Tyr Centric semi metallic pads . You will get more braking and a lot less dust. My customers keep coming back for them.
They are very long lasting and have no noise issues.

hard to find though

find a dealer through www.centricparts.com

Akebono Euro Ceramic. Good stopping, no noise, and no dust. Get them on the net from Ebay or Amazon.com, cheaper than OEM.

I've used "Satisfied" Pro-Ceramic from Schmucks/Kragen on my S70 and 850 and have never had a problem, including no noise problems.

Thank you all for your input.

Can someone explain to me the different technologies, their pros and cons. I'm one of those people who likes to understand what he is doing.

Another feature no one, including myself, has talked about is heat build up. All I've heard is a vertical channel in mid pad is desirable. Is there more to it?

What I've heard about the mid-pad split is that it increases the resonance frequency of the pad(s), causing the "squeal" if any to be above the human hearing range.

+1, I am quite pleased with mine. Be aware, from a cold start when below 0 degrees farenheit, they lose a bit of bite until they warm up. One or two taps on the brake is sufficient to warm the pad at these temps.
