93 850 GLT cruise control went bad
My cruise control on my '93 850 GLT decided to stop working one day. I checked the fuses, tried to "reset" it by turning it on and off in different combinations with the ignition, but to no avail. Are they subject to breaking? Do I need to remove the steering wheel to repair it? Is there a way of taking the stick apart to check the contacts on the inside? Is this a "dealer repair"? Thanks for any assistance.
Where as I can't, yet, tell you what might be wrong; I can tell you what I know. (ps My 93 Glt's Cruise is non-functional as well) Please note that I used to write computer technical procedures and manuals so tend to get wordy in my descriptions.
The dealer tells me they've seen it before. After 10 years I would hope so. They claim it is the Cruise-Controls Control Unit. On mine it is located under the battery tray.
Things to check. My fuse box lists two fuses for the cruise. One has brackets (Cruise) the other doesn't. I don't know what that means but it must be that way for a reason. The part that actually works the throttle is located under the dash and is attached to the accelerator pedal itself. If you take the lower dash cover off, the one below the steering column (3-#25 torx), you can see the unit. To test: disconnect the vac line, push the acc pedal to the floor, put your finger over the vac fitting, and release the pedal. The pedal should stay put, if not it is leaking and the most likely source of your problem. Replace the vac line. Next check the vacuum line which on mine runs through the fire wall, around the ABS, under the air box, outboard of the battery, across the front and finally under the inboard side of the battery. I had to remove both air ducts to see it. To see if it is leaking you need a partner. Just disconnect the vac line and repeat the procedure with your partner pressing and releasing the gas pedal. If it still holds it could be the control unit or the computer. My guess would be the control unit as computers usually don't loose just the cruise function.
I'm sure there's a way to remove and disassemble the cruise stalk but I would not mess with it unless it can be done with out fooling with the steering wheel or any wires. Triggering the airbag would be dangerous.
I've not had a chance to work on mine yet, but will keep you informed of what I find.

my cruise control stopped working... I had noticed that I had to just barely think about touching the brake when it was engaged, and it would turn off the cc, whic is supposed to happend when you apply the brakes. When it stopped working, I reached under the brake pedal with my "gas" foot, and pulled it out (i.e. the opposite of putting on the brake) and Voila! the cc worked again! It seems that the brake pedal would bounce and simulate my foot on the brake, thereby disconnecting the cc. Took it to my friendly Volvo guy who adjusted the pedal, and the cc works great!
to alphanerd: thanks for the info. my repair manual's advice wise that the information wasn't available when the book went to print. I'm located in the Hudson Valley of NY and it's been a bit chilly around here this winter so I won't get around to checking it for another week or two
