The Upgrade Chip Bible

That used to be buried near the bottom on my main page under Tips, Repairs, Upgrades etc  . Now it's on its own page where it should have been all along. It is absolutely jam-packed with useful info for anyone looking to go faster in their 850/70 specifically, and Volvo in general. :D

Many thanks to David M!

I've heard from a few of my buddys that also have 95' 850 t5's and they said they weren't sure how long the automatic trans. would hold, because of their known weakness. Do any of the chip manufacturers modify shift points to make it easier on the transmission?

Adding these chips to upgrade available horse-power is obviously what has created these innovations to the stock factory set-up. Aside from poorer (I assume) fuel enconomy, what other negatives might one expect to encounter both short and long-term?

the only thing being replaced is a write-once eprom in a square PLCC package. the result is soldering a bulky eeprom that is reprogramable and it is uploaded a rom image that takes less than a hot minute to transfer. honestly i think they are ripping people off its a job i could do myself if i borrowed a tuned ECU from another volvo i could rip the rom image from the eeprom and slap it on an Amtel EEPROM for less than 8$. the tricky part is making a socket for it. i dont have all the pcb tools but they are easily obtainable. not only could i create duplicate chips for ECUs but i could put the software that goes on there on the internet if i didnt get sued by tme or rica or whoever's program i steal. but then it makes me wonder how companies such as those are legal in the first place...they totally change the function of the vehicle and infringe on proprietary technology.

guys, you aren't paying for anything but new software, the only reason why the eprom is being replaced is because the software is burned in an eprom and cant be overwritten. in short you are paying for a rom chip that is programmed with the same "performance minded" data as every other sucker out there and also paying for the fitting on the standard board. imo, its not worth more than 30$ (=

i've only started to read about ECUs and i grasped the concept in a very very short amount of time. correct me if im wrong, but i seriosly doubt it.
