1996 850 Turbo ABS Problem No power at 2-wire Harness

Post by StarryTripper »

The '96 850 Turbo has lots of problem, one of which is no ABS or TRACS light when ignition at position 2

I figured I'd try repairing module and that maybe previous owner pulled the dash lights

After getting the module out, open and my best at soldering what looked bad I put it back in, still no ABS or TRACS light, but not too surprised

I used meter to check voltage at the two harnesses

The 2 wire harness showed only microvolts, and just may have been digital meter bouncing around and there was really no voltage

Looking closer I see bare wire on both leads coming from under the black plastic cylindrical cover

I also put meter across the red & black wires on the large harness

I got about 9.8 volts on each set of them

Fuses 9, 14 & 29 are good

I have access to AllData Online but all the diagnostics seem to use a Volvo tool and test box which I do not have

Any ideas where else to test? Could it just be a weak battery?

I have a cable in my A6 that I use with VAG-COM, I think it will work with VOL-FCR so when I get my car back from body shop hopefully I can try that to get ABS codes

Start by replacing the lamps in the cluster so that you can tell if it is working or not. Unless the car is moving there is no reason for the modulator pump leads to have power to them so it is difficult to do voltmeter readings that mean anything.

Chances are about 99% that the module has bad solder joints but start at the beginning with the lights.

I pulled the instrument cluster and went light by light with continuity test on meter, 3 dead bulbs

ABS, TRACS & MIL (that one had been working till just recently)

In teh interest of time I swapped to known good ones (washer and rear fog) over to ABS & TRACS and plugged it back in

I plugged the ABS Module in, but did not bolt it back

ABS & TRACS light up now at Position 2 and remain on when idling

Holding the TRACS Switch down turns the light off, ABS stays on, when releasing the TRACS light turns back on

I guess I'm gonna move over to the DIY ABS Module repair and ask some questions regarding the soldering, I currently have it out and open
