Transmission Problem or linkage????

Post by Jimbo2869 »

a few months ago my linkage slipped on my 96 and the mechanic fixed it no problem and no cost. A few days ago on a trip I stopped and the tranny was stuck in high and after a sec slammed into low. It ran fine then until I stopped at a 7-11 and when I went into reverse it acted like the brkes were on and in nuetral it would move forward. Now when the car is cool it runs fine but after a few miles it starts acting like the brakes are on in reverse. Any ideas???

Sounds like it could be linkage, especially where it had to be adjusted before. But, let's try the basics first: check your transmission fluid level if you haven't already:
A 30 minute run; back to a level surface; apply parking brake; engage P and, with the engine idling move the selector lever through all gears pausing for 4-5 seconds in each position. Back to P and let engine idle for about 2 minutes, remove dipstick, wipe on a lint free cloth, replace dipstick then withdraw it and check the reading.
Make sure that transmission fluid is up to level and that the fluid does not smell burned. Fluid should be a dark red.
