Volvo Repair Database Key wont turn in the ignition past I...

Post by tomczakj »

I have a 98 v70. So i get into my car to go to dinner the other night and my key wont turn in the ignition so the car wont start. It only goes up to I and then stops. The lights wont even come on so I dont think it is even making it to I actually. Can anyone help me figure out what is wrong so I can get it fixed? I could really use it. Thanks

Is it possible that your steering wheel is turned? If so, it could be putting pressure on the lock mechanism. Try wiggling the steering wheel in either direction to relieve the pressure, while turning the key.

No. My wheel is straight. Ive tried turning the wheel at different increments and trying the key but it still doesnt work. Is is possible it could be the ignition switch itself?

Can you try another key?

Did you inspect the key for nicks or bends, or excess wear?

You might also want to move the shifter, this might also bind up the lock.

Sorry to say, but it may be time for a new ignition lock cylinder. I replaced mine last year, but the only place to get a new one is at the stealership. Expect to pay $300 for the part, and another $300 for labor. I decided to replace it myself and saved the labor. If this is the case, research how to change it out from previous posts on the ingition lock cylinder.

I'm not sure where the '98s were in the sequential changes on the ignition switch. On the 850's they are pure cake and it takes much longer to remove the collar around the steering column than it does to replace the switch. On the later models this thread may be helpful.

So with the key in position 1 you can't press in and hold the shift lock override button and then shift the car to neutral?

That's kind of strange.

This must be some kind of a Volvo "past due date" strike action? In my '99 S80 the ignition switch doesn't want to know my key this morning  and wouldn't even turn to I position (only 1/3 of the way from 0 to I)

I left wheels slightly turned yesterday, so the steering is locked, refuses to wiggle at all. Now, where's my screwdriver set...?
