2001 s40 tough start shaking engine red catalytic converter

Post by jacko »

Thank you for reading my post. Any and all input is greatly appreciated.

I have a 2001 S40 turbo, 60,000 miles.

1st symptom - hard to start in morning for many weeks. Once it starts if you don't give it a little gas it dies.
2nd symptom - finally one day, you can crank the car as long as you want, but wouldn't start, also, CEL code "camshaft and crankshaft sensor" came on.
3rd - checked the timing belt and it skipped 3 teeth
Solution implemented - installed new timing belt (all 3 marks are aligned), tensioner and idler pulley, FPR, spark plugs, camshaft and crankshaft sensor.
4th - After all that its still tough to start, must give some gas to start, but when turned on, engine shakes, idles rough, catalytic converter turns red, and you can smell fuel, then eventually car dies.

Checked compression and 180 across the board. Check spark plugs, injectors and fuel pump. All seems okay.

Could the valves be bent even with good compression numbers?

What else could be wrong?

I have a feeling I'm not doing the compression test correctly.

Does anyone have instructions on how to do it for my S40?
