Hey everybody I am new to this site as well to Volvo. My wife and I bought a 94 850 GLT(I think it is loaded) Wagon with 248671 miles on it with no major repairs, original motor and transmission. So the obvious happened we both fell in love with it. Now here is where our problem starts we bought a 96 850 sedan with 186000 miles. The first day we bought it she was driving and it was wanting to stall while driving when she pulled over it bellows out black smoke and stalls. Will start right back up. The next day I drive it and smae thing. So I start looking around and open the ECU box and notice that the ECU closest to the driver side is not latched all the way so I push it down and latch it. Now I have a car that went from running not the greatest to a no start. It will crankover the fuel pump is kicking on and there is pressure at the rail. In the trunk there was a crank positioning sensor so I threw that in for shits and giggles and still nothing.
Another thing in my '94 there are three ECU boxes and only two in the '96 (actually just looked in glove box and manual says '95 but the car is OBDII so must be '96)

Actually Volvo started putting OBD-II on some cars in '94. They still had the OBD-I system as well. I actually like the OBD-I system a bit better. Pull the codes from ports A-2 and A-6 on the OBD-I system and post them back. If you have not used the OBD-I system here is how it works.

You may or may not have any codes at all on port A-6 - it depends on the ECU.

Back to it. I followed the instructions via the link. When the probe is inserted into recepticle A2 and the button is pressed light comes on and then when released no code what so ever not even the 1-1-1. So would I be out of line to say that the ECU is more than likely my culprit.

That was part of what I was looking for. Since your problem came to a head when you seated the ECU I think I would start by cleaning up the contacts on the ECU edge connector and the socket.

Don't forget to disconnect negative battery cable before you start with cleaning ecu's connections!
Make sure that negative battery cable is still disconnected when you're installing your ecu back in the car.
Good luck!

Well I did as everybody advised and still no luck what so ever. A local salvage yard has an ECU for $50.00 if I pull it out, let me know if that would be a good way to go. I would really like to send my ECU into ipd for an upgrade but I am about $690 short. But any suggestions would be great thanx in advance.

Before you go spending hard earned let's make sure the OBD-I boxes are working. Based on your description I think they are but try to pull codes from other ports like A-1 and A-3. Even if you get 1-1-1 it will verify the functionality of that end of the system.

I verified that other ports are throwing out codes, only A2 seems to be dead can get codes from A1 and A3.
I just wanted to thank those that have been so kind to help me.

Given the sequence of events and that fact that it won't talk to you I am leaning towards replacing the ECU. I hate throwing parts at a car without a definitive diagnosis but the cost of getting a definitive diagnosis far exceeds the cost of a used part. Make sure the model number matches. Ebay is a great resource if you can't find a cheap one at the local junk yard.
Best of luck and let us know how it all works out.
