V70 2001 Remove rear speaker to replace brake bulb

Hi,

I need to replace one of the brake bulbs on a 2001 V70 turbo. This particular bulb requires removal of the speaker.

The manual says 'Pull out the red tab in the speaker. Then press on the black pin above the extracted red tab and twist out the speaker. '

I have tried everything I can think of and the speaker will not come out. Does anybody have any hints on how to get the speaker out?

I'm not entirely sure I know what the manual is talking about when it mentions the black pin. There is a black rectangle shaped tab just above the red tab. I've tried pushing this toward the rear of the car, pulling it toward me and pushing it down toward the floor of the car. I've tried turning the speaker left and right and nothing works.

Any tips would be appreciated.

Replacement of rear turn signal and brake light bulbs
Switch off all lights and turn the ignition switch to position 0.
Using a screwdriver, carefully pry off the speaker grille.
Pull out the red tab in the speaker.
Then press on the black pin above the extracted red tab and twist out the speaker.
Twist the bulb holder counter-clockwise, and withdraw it.
Fit a new bulb.
Fit the bulb holder in place and twist it clockwise.
Refit the speaker and press in the red tab.
Press the speaker grille back into position.

Yes, that was the set of instructions I was talking about. As I mentioned, I'm not sure I know what black pin the instructions refer to. I'm also not sure which way to twist the speaker. So any other clues would be appreciated.

Ok, I did this myself now so I see your confusion.
When it says twist the speaker out it really means pull the top down towards you and lift the speaker out. The black pin they are speaking about is just above the red pin and when they say push it down they should have said pry down with a small screw driver. That how I got mine out.

Thanks Romort628! Your instructions were very helpful and I finally managed to get the speaker out. Knowing I had to pull it toward me helped. I tried to use a screwdriver but that didn't work so I finally grabbed the small opening on either side of the black tab and pulled and it came out. I hope I've attached a picture showing the speaker and the black tab above the extended red tab. There's a yellow arrow pointing to the black tab.

Then, of course, I discovered that the bulb I was trying to replace was not one where the speaker had to be removed but I don't think I could have seen the bulb unless I did remove the speaker. It was the top brake bulb and I had to remove the access panel on the inside of the cargo area to get to it.

And I would like to talk to whoever designed these small spaces that it's impossible to work in! My hands are scraped from trying to get the various bulbs in and out.

I had the same problem, and this solved it - thanks! It's often the case with moldings in cars that you need to pull or twist so hard that if you're pulling the wrong way, you'll break it. Case in point: when it says "Using a screwdriver, carefully pry off the speaker grille.", it would have been helpful to point out that you need to pry at the bottom. If you pry at the top, the retainer tabs break.

Thanks for all of the info here.
The weird key point about removing the speaker is that you push the top tab *away from you*, ie, don't pull down on it, while at the same time needing to pull the speaker in the opposite direction, *toward you*. Once you pull it out and look you can see it, I successfully followed the directions, but I cracked the speaker latch by pushing down on it and it may just break off if I have to do this again. I pried it out by putting the blade of a slot screwdriver between the speaker and the frame and turning it to pry out.
Also, I saw somewhere about before pulling out the bulb, crumple up a towel or newspaper and shove it in down below the bulb in case you drop it pulling it out or putting it back in. I didn't drop mine but if you did, you'd be shopping for another bulb holder and dealing with a rattle most likely forever.
