740 turbo wagon 1991 Removal of radio/tape player

Post by greengator »

Hi there, I'm new to the forum...new to volvos in general and had a couple questions. I am trying to remove the radio to get the serial numbers off of the back so that I can get the code because the code generated through the VIN number did not work. I am at a loss on how to remove it. I removed the panel around the shifter and the access panel to the fuse panel and do not know how to proceed. Also the instrument light for the shifter is burned out but I cannot find it only the heated switch light?? Any help would be greatly appreciated...Take care

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

Different models of radio have been fitted to the 740 with different securing methods. Have you a model number?

The gear selector light can be reached by removing the ashtray and the centre console panel in front of the selector. There is a screw at each end of the brush in the selector cover. Remove the screws and lift the cover out.

So i was able to get the cig lighter/cubby hole out of the way, and it appears that the radio is held in with metal spring clips, however the right side looks wedged behind something while the left is free. Is there a way to back the clip out, or if I cut it can these things be bought or will I have to fabricate it? Thanks for your help....

1. Locate your friendly neighbourhood car thief and he will have it out in 20 seconds, or less if he is really experienced.

OR

2. Using strong wire, a clothes hanger is ideal, fashion a hook and pull the spring clip inwards. The spring clips sit in grooves with a stop at the end. The grooves aren't very deep so you don't need to move the clips very far.

While you have it out make two of the hooks to help if you need it out again.

Thank you for the update.
