I have a 1995 Volvo 960 with 108000 miles. Ever since the car was new I have had a harmonic type of vibration on the steering wheel. Vibration is noticed at lower speeds of ~ 65mph, though at 65mph it's not that annoying. When the car was new and under warranty (way back then) I brought it (vibration) to the attention of the mechanic who intern replaced the engine mounts and some bushings. However, no noticeble improvements were realized.
The vibration is much more pronounced when traveling on a smooth road surface, and at speeds of 75-83 miles per hour. Further, at 3000 rpm. the vibration seems the most intense.
As I said, it's not that the steering wheel is shaking, which would indicate a need for tire balance or perhaps worn out suspension. I have had front struts replaced along with tie-rod links and other bushings as the normal wear and tare. But the vibration is still there.
The car is in great mechanical and physical shape. Steering is precise; no free play.
Is it possible that the vibration is coming from the drive shaft (it's a rwd car) or the universal joint?
Any suggestions welcome???????

You may want to try and check your front wheel bearings. Raise your front end and grab the tires by the 12 and 6 o'clock position and try to rock it. Or grab the 3 and 9 o'clock position and try to rock it also. If you feel any play then you've got some worn out bearings.
I had to replace my front right wheel bearing (850 GLT) because I was getting some harmonic noise (although no vibration felt thru the steering wheel). The noise would change when making slight turns (50 mph plus) on the highway.
After replacing the culprit, noise went away.
