why did you purchase your Volvo?

I bought my current Volvo cuz the previous one started getting tired due to age. I never considered buying anything else.

Ditto the previous comments about the seats, which are outstanding. Despite the nagging little repair issues, the cars are very well built and sturdy. Once you remove the OEM bodyroll, they actually handle surprisingly well.

Well, I was looking for a quasi-luxury car (Buick Park Ave, Lincoln, etc.), went car-shopping for my friend, saw an S70 with 90-day warranty (being sold by the repair shop where we take the 960), I test drove it, liked it, the price was right--so I bought it. The more I drive that car, the more I know my next car will have to be another Volvo.

I first purchased a Volvo in 1980. It was a 240 DL. I found it to be dependable, and I found a mechanic I can trust. Next I purchased an 1986 240 and now I have a 1998 V70 T5. It is in excellant shape and I imagine it will last me my lifettime.

It never occurred to us to buy a Volvo at first, but:

1) we bought it two years ago because our 17 year old son needed a vehicle to drive around town and to go to work
2) it was purchased from his boss, so if it broke down when my son was going to work the boss might not get too mad
3) it is a station wagon without tinted windows

4) I can borrow it to haul things when needed
5) the 850 wagon is built like a tank and my son had just gotten his license - so far no dents
6) the price was right and it had all the maintenance records for the 218,000 miles that were on it at that time
7) we have the help from this forum to fix just about anything - and we're doing most of it ourselves (very easy to work on)

So - how can we go wrong not buying it

I bought my Volvo because Volvos are humble cars that are often times under appreciated despite their performance abilities unlike the flashier BMW's, Mercedes, Lexus's etc. I don't need everyone knowing my car is fast... lol
Plus, the face people make when they see a Volvo kicking their a** is priceless!

Why indeed? Just put an 850 wagon on the road two weeks ago. It's 16 y/o and has 196,000 miles on it. Estimated repairs are: 300.00 - fuel pump; 75.00 - fuel relay; 300.00 - driver's p/w motor; 750.00 - front suspension repair; 1200.00 - body work. Am I nuts? After test driving 3 times, having it evaluated twice by independent mechanincs I'm not sure what I was thinking. The ride, the brakes, the sound of the 5 cyl purring (did I say purring?), the quietness, the seats (ahhhh!), and the sound of the doors closing.

Now, watch me smile each and every time I get into this awesome car. Then, watch my family, friends, co-workers, and colleages as they make weak excuses to come along "just for the ride" (since when I ask?). It's only been two weeks and I've been booked for extensive road trips (oh and you're driving, don'cha know?).

Congested traffic, road detours, foul weather - I am no longer bothered by it all. This car is the absolute bomb. Who knew - Volvo? Since when did driving get this good?

I bought my 95 850 N/A auto from a family relative.the reason why I bought this car was I had a w123(1977) Mercedes car with auto trans and the car's body was all rusted.also the mechanical parts the engine was failing one of the pistons wasnt working.I was also bored of the conventional ignition system which had contact breaker and the fuel system which has carburettor. especially after I bought my volvo I realized almost everything is electrical and electronic.I had an accident with mercedes because it didnt have abs system in it. but the most impressive thing is you really feel safe in a volvo.. my old mercedes had no airbag..

after I boght the volvo I realized how easy its to have a modern car.. no more carburettor and contact breaker ajdustment, no more valve adjustment.. and its fuel consumption is much less than the mercedes..

do I miss the mercedes? I tought I would but I dont miss it since I have a better car..I hope to drive this car for another 20 yrs at least.

the volvo I bought had a failing auto trans and engine. I replaced them and now the car rocks..

My mom always wanted one, but could never afford to buy one. My sister bought an aging 240 wagon when she had her first baby. We liked it, and we bought our own aging 240 wagon when we had our first baby. When my wife was pregnant with our second, our little Mazda got totaled and we ordered the 850. The 240 finally got too rusty, having been the previous owner's New England winter car and summer Outer Banks car, so I picked up a used 740 Turbo wagon.

We loved all these cars. They're comfortable, the ergonomics are good (+1 on all the positive comments about the seats). They're also understated cars--they look like less than they are so it's kind of like driving a private secret every day.

I guess the follow up question will have to be: Why do you keep your old Volvo? We don't like the new ones. . . .
