240 wrecked?

Post by 240tim »

hello,

my 240 got hit and i'm wondering if it is a write-off.

turning left onto the road and it got hit by an oncoming car at low speed. the hit was on the driver's rear tire and pushed the car 180 degrees around. the damage is all in the rear drivetrain: the track rod mount (where is mounts to the body) is pushed towards the centre, the driveshaft is up against the right side of the tunnel and the floor of the trunk is buckled. this looks pretty fatal to my untrained eye. the car was a beater to start with, but i think this would be hard to fix, right?

assuming so and that the car is in raleigh, any ideas for disposing of it? the engine was running ok, no a/c, lots of bent body panels already. the tow man reckons he might give me $30 for it. it's an '89 5 speed. is that the best option? i live in a apartment complex and don't have a place to store and part it.

thanks for any suggestions,
tim

Give Becker Automotive over in Durham a call; they work on lots of old Volvo's and sometimes buy salvage ones for parts. You could see if they want anything off of it.

Oh, Sweedish Imports (also in Durham) is another you may want to check with. I know they work more on a lot of Saab's than Volvo's, but I have had some work on both of my Swede cars done there, and I know they have junked cars in the back they also use for parts.

Tim, sorry to hear about the accident

It's been my experience that a car just is not the same after an accident. I'm not expert so I can't tell you if the impact compromised the integrity of the vehicle, which is also another thing to keep in mind, your safety is pretty important. Check with the guys jablackburn posted, they should be able to tell you.

ok, thanks. i was thinking about becker's tonight and wondering if they bought cars. i'll give them a try tomorrow.

i'll check with npr and see if they would take it as a donation. i put an ad on craig's list and someone wanted the tranny (not the car). maybe i can sell the tranny and then the rest...
