1998 S70 - Which timing belt kit to get?

Post by firekiller75 »

So I'm confused... I even called FCP Groton, and confused them. My '98 S70 is engine s/n 1381558... After the magic cutoff. According to FCP Groton's website, if it's after the 1266127 engine, their kit (850TBKIT) won't work. BUT, it says "if your 98 model does NOT have a distributor cap and rotor, then this will NOT work on your car..if it does have a cap and rotor, then this is the kit". I have a cap and rotor :(

I called FCP Groton and they were unable to help me. I want to replace my timing belt tomorrow, and I'm not sure which belt to get. I hate to pull it all apart to find out i have the wrong belt??

Also, I've been studying the instructions about compressing the tensioner and all. If I don't have the hydraulic tensioner, how does that work? I don't think I've seen any photos of the mechanical tensioner. UGH.

The car was manufactured in 4/98.

Any help to clear this up would be great!
Thanks, Adam.

Hmmm... So looks like the hydraulic (older model) then, huh? Guess I can buy both belts and hope it's the older style tensioner (for reliability's sake!)

Thanks for checking,
Adam.

It is easy enough to just pop the timing belt cover off and take a look to know for sure, one bolt holds it on and then it just lifts off.

Pulled the cover to a BIG uh-oh moment! As I pulled the timing cover out, I noticed it had a rub mark on it. Looks like while spinning, the timing belt rubbed partly through the cover

I put my finger against the belt, and when pushed, I was able to move the tensioner (the newer, mechanical style)... With one finger! I guess the cover was the only thing that kept me from slinging the timing belt.

Needless to say, the car is now grounded until I have the tensioner in hand!

I had a similar "Ruh Roh" moment with my '94 a few months ago with the hydraulic tensioner. My timing belt wasn't slapping the cover but it was trying to slide off of the sprockets as I removed the cover to inspect the water pump.

I did the same thing, the car was parked until parts arrived and at the end of the day it was no worse off for it. Occasionally you can dodge a bullet.

I think I dodged a cannonball, not a bullet!

The car has 183k miles with an unknown service history. I just bought it a week or two ago for $300, so what can I expect? The timing belt stuff is costing as much as the car!
