Possible 2000 S80 transmission problem

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Possible 2000 S80 transmission problem

Post by silkyslim »

Hello I have a non turbo 2000 s80 I've experienced a problem for the last few days. The car will shift to drive but will not roll, it will move if it is in gear 3,2 or 1. My fluid level is good no particles, no crunching noise shifting gears. Please advise my dad and bro think the gears are slipping or it could the gear box. I'm a complete newbie so I dunno. what should be done?

Sorry Slim, but I think you're gonna hear news you won't like on that one. Good luck though...

The transmission guy said the problem was a "forward gear failure" or sway assembly. My question is should he rebuild the tranny or install a used one with 50,000 miles on it. Which one will offer less problems in the future.

The used one will save you money, but the rebuilt one will last longer, I think.

No matter which one you go with, it should be flushed every 30k, that will increase the life of the transmission.
