B230F Engine timeing belt replacement ongoing prob

Post by JDDurham »

Hello all again
Okay well I put the drive belts on and got them straight. It didnt start I am charging the battery now so I can try it again. I was checking out the internet looking for information on my engine to make sure I didnt have the engine type that damaged when the belt breaks.
I ran across a website that said
4.Line up engine: Use crankshaft center bolt (24mm) to turn engine, bringing the engine to TDC, No 1 firing. This is indicated when the mark on the camshaft sprocket is in line with the mark on the camshaft cover or the drivebelt backplate. At the same time the marks on the crankshaft sprocket guide plate and the oil seal housing will be in line. IMPORTANT! Do not turn crankshaft or camshaft with timing belt removed.
from the site---

Well, I turned the all the shafts when the belt wasnt installed lol
Am I screwed?

thank you so much for your help I do not have the money to pay an auto mechanic.

Not at all. It can be a problem with other makes so I guess they don't want you to make a habit of it.

Your engine is definitely a non-interference type. Valves and pistons don't bang into each other when the timing belt snaps.

To get everything back in line after the t-belt is replaced see if you can acquire a plastic knitting needle or something similar, the longer the better. Take out #1 spark plug, insert the knitting needle into the plug hole and turn the engine slowly, using the crankshaft nut, until the knitting needle starts to come up the hole. When it stops coming up and starts to go back down turn the engine the other way until the needle is at its highest point. That is top dead centre for #1 cylinder. If the timing marks don't line up you need to align them so you will probably have to take the t-belt off again. Of course you could be very lucky and they are aligned. Turn the engine until the timing marks do align and replace the t-belt.

Keep in mind it has to be at TDC on the compression stroke. You can tell it's the compression stroke if the cam lobes are pointing up. If the exhaust valve is pushed down your on the exhaust stroke and you have to bring the crank around again.

Once this is done lining everything else up shouldn't be too difficult.
