It's your decision.
You can find used one for about 50$ and you have no idea how long it will last.
On the other side, for 70$ you can buy Walbro with a great reputation and have one year warranty for it.
From all of the Matthews volvo site members & volvospeed members, there was one complaint about Walbro, and i'm 100% sure that owner ran into a cheap chineese copy.
There's no need for expensive oem Bosch fuel pump.
Btw,did you checked fuel pump relay? If not, check it to be sure before you order a new pump.

Can I jump in here
Try removing the injector rail laying a lot of rags below the open ports turn the ignition on and see if there is fuel coming out of the injector ports [its best to remove the injectors for this test]
If theres not fuel then thats where to start looking as you say you have a spark. Don't start cleaning things till you know you have fuel and a spark otherwise you could end up spending hundreds because of a simple relay/fuel filter/fuel pump.

I have replaced the fuel relay (103). I opened the fuse box, there was a simple "rig job" that consisted of a wire and two flat pin connectors at pin 15 and 87. I have also checked for pressure and there was none via the schraeder valve at the tip of the fuel rail. I will go with an OEM pump as there is one on ebay for not very much money. I just want the vehicle to run enough for a few months so I can get some thing better.

no pressure at fuel rail gave you then the no start...or a start and die..
its your call but it can be a gamble having an used pump it could last years or months just make shure you get a new clean sock ..(filter at the fuel pump)
on the other side a genuie walbro pump or a hella is cheap and it will give you piece of mind, i changed for a new pump and could tell you it does make a difference for not really much more...
my 2 cents
best of luck...

As I was about to order a hella fuel pump direct replacement, the online help suggested I also get the fuel sending unit. Is this so? I did not anticipate this added expense. Of course it would make sense since already am buying a new pump and filter, wouldn't the sending unit need to be replaced as well?
Is he just upselling or is it realy advisable to do so?

If your old fuel sending unit works, then you don't need new one,buy just a fuel pump.
Be sure to get in-tank fuel filter(sock). It should be the part of a new fuel pump(shuould be in the box),but if not,ask for it from them.

If you want something simple, cheap and reliable (many of us have done, including myself), go buy that Walbro pump (not that hella, i remember read somewhere people had some problems w/ it) fromblueberry1 wrote:As I was about to order a hella fuel pump direct replacement,
http://www.europartsdirect.com/
Thats $57 shipped!
Follow the instructions from
http://volvospeed.com/vs_forum/index.ph ... t-how-too/
If you still not sure, call DW Volvo ask them for a pump only (no housing) thats about $100.

agreed if the fuel sender unit works no need to change
i have changed two pumps in mine ( and used one and then finaly a new hella) never changed fuel sender and works fine...
walbro are noisy but good i have hella and have no problems ...changing pumps in housing was a piece of cake with the hella pump...by the way hella pumps are made in the us and i have heard that hella has joined forces now with pierburg..... an official volvo part supplier....
you should be fine with either choice ...or if you can get the oem pump (its a bosch if im not mistaken) from a volvo dealer for $100 new go for it i would for $100 no contest..

Well, I have the Walbro pump in. In place of the old original Bosch and it was a bit of a challenge getting it into the receptacle. I have to finish it tomorrow morning since it got dark rather quickly today. Any other thoughts and tips on what to watch for as I try to get this thing working again. I am changing the fuel filter as well and have cleaned the MAF sensor and relieved all the pressure out via the schrader valve. I believe there is another air pressure valve aft of the fuel filter that I am checking as well. Here goes nothing....

And nothing is the result.....I have backtracked and re-read all of the notes and tips but still not start. What could be wrong? I definetly have fuel pressure and i can hear the new pump working. I can see that there is fuel going into the rail and injectors by the tell tale sign of a drop or two of gas coming from those lines. I have replaced the fuel relay and tested it to be working and have replaced the plugs and cleaned out the distributor and rotor. Any ideas.....
