How many MPG or KmPL should I be getting?

Post by bluenote27 »

Hi,

I just bought a 1984 240 Sedan. It's a 2.1 L Canadian made car. When I filled up the tank today I divided my distance traveled with the amount of litres of gas consumed into a Km per L ratio.

Right now I'm getting 7.39 Km per L of gas. (about 17 MPG I think).

Is this what I should expect or is my old girl indulging a bit too much at the all you can drink gas buffet?

I'm looking forward to hearing other MPG or KPL statistics from people.

Thanks,

It really depends on a number of factors. City and town driving will give me 15-17 MPG; I average 22-24 MPG freeway driving at about 75 MPH. When it is colder, fuel economy goes down also. Having a lot of excess weight will bring it down some more. But I am relatively hard on the turbo in town driving, so if I laid-off the gas a bit, my mileage would improve.

If you are getting 17 MPG with mostly town driving that is fine... If you are mostly highway driving at 55-65 MPH (80-100KPH), there is something wrong. Mixed driving would give something in that area too.

For reference I am driving a 1991 2.3-L Turbo 940.

Thanks a lot for your post mike. I've been riding a bike for so long that the 17MPG seemed pretty low. But just like you I think I ride my girl a little to hard sometimes. I'm going to be taking it easy this tank so that I can judge my max fuel economy for when the bank acount gets dry at the end of semester!

Thanks again for your post. I look forward to hearing from other Volvo RWD drivers!
