Install used wheel bearings?

Yeah, installing a $30 bearing is worse than leaving in the bad one.

Following up on this one: I installed two used wheel hub/bearings from a rather clean 1999 V70 with maybe 130k miles on them. When I held them in my hand and turned them, I felt smooth movement with a predictable drag which indicates healthy bearings. Seems like a good quick test of a used bearing off the car.

When I held and turned the failed 350k mile bearings, they felt rough, catching, gravely. One of the failed bearings was only making a slight noise when driving but in hand it felt rough. The other failed bearing which sounded like a motorcycle felt like I was rolling gravel around in my hand.

I'd trust used OE bearings on a P80. Both of mine made it over 320k mi on the factory bearings. unless they were driving through salt water up over the axles and racing in the dessert, I don't see how used ones wouldn't make it to 300k.

I've been stealing used bearings out of junkers for years now whenever I needed one. Never had a problem.
