98 V70 MOOG front wheel bearings

Post by 98v70dad »

Does anyone have service experience with MOOG front wheel bearings?

I've searched here and found a little info but not enough to make me confident in buying that brand. One post said MOOG is a reboxed FAG part and another said the MOOG wheel bearing is remanufactured item with a new bearing in a FAG or other quality manufacturer core.

The benefit to me for the MOOG part is that its available to me tomorrow locally. There is a little savings but if its not a dependable quality part I'd rather just order and wait for the FAG part.

As far as i know it's re-boxed oem FAG.These hubs are NOT serviceable because the bearings are sealed inside of a hub and can't be replaceable. That's why they are costly.

My AP guy told me Federal Mogul bought Moog some time ago. Either makes good quality parts, I would use a Moog part without hesitation.

Moog is Federal Mogul for a loooong time.
But that's not relevant....the most important is that you get FAG bearing in Moog box for a lot cheaper than the same bearing in FAG box.

Febi also sells INA rollers and tensioners in their box for about 30% cheaper.

From my internet search,
- MOOG with FAG bearing inside = $100.
- FAG bearing = $100.

So basically same price.

yeah. When I posted last night it was pretty late and I was actually looking at the MOOG rear bearing price which is cheaper. This morning I just decided to order the FAG bearing and wait until next weekend to install it. I didn't find it anywhere for 100, though. Where can you get that price? I found it for about 113 if I remember right. I'd rather pay 100.

Always replace wheel bearings in pairs?? That's a new one. Maybe you're thinking the other one may be close behind. I say replace them when they go out, which is very rarely on these cars.

In all of the P80 cars I've owned, I've only put in one new hub bearing, a rear, and by the time I was installing I wasn't sure there was actually a bearing problem anyway. But the car was at 260k, I didn't sweat it. The other 3 hubs are original, I'm keeping an eye on them.

What a fantastic price, thanks for posting!!!

Replace 1 vs a pair. We have talked about this many times.

If a bearing fails at let's say 30K, then replace only the bad one.

If a bearing fails at 180K, replace both b/c the other one follows soon.
This is exactly what I did recently @180K: RF bearing is bad, LF still OK, but I replaced both, no regret at all.
